Measuring Guide for Feather Cushion Replacements

Over time, feather cushions can flatten, collapse, and lose their loft. This guide explains what to do if you’re replacing old feather interiors with new ones, and how we make sure your new cushions fit properly and look the part.

Feather cushions don’t last forever

Old feather fills break down over time. The feathers lose their curl, the filling collapses, and the cushions stop springing back after use. When this happens, it’s time to replace the interiors.

To order, just tell us the cover size — width, depth, and border thickness. From there, we calculate the correct amount of fill to restore the cushion’s original shape and comfort.

đź“Ź Understanding Crown Height

We calculate it for you

We work to traditional upholstery standards when building new feather cushions. The “crown” is the raised centre of the cushion — essential for proper loft and support.

As a general rule:
A cushion with a 7.5cm (3″) border will finish at around 15cm in the centre once filled. That’s the right crown height to give the cushion structure and bounce without it looking overstuffed or saggy.

You don’t need to work this out — we do all the calculations for you based on your cover size.

✍️ What You Need to Tell Us

Just the cover measurements

When placing your order, all we need is:

  • Width (side to side)
  • Depth (front to back)
  • Border thickness (the side panel, usually piped)

We’ll take care of the rest — calculating the fill weight, crown height, and feather mix to match your original cushion performance.

🧼 Daily Maintenance

Plumping is essential

Feather cushions do need some looking after. You’ll need to plump them every day to keep the crown looking neat and full. Unlike fibre, however, feathers bounce back much better — so long as you stay on top of it.

Ensures the best result

For the most accurate fit, we recommend sending us your empty covers once your order is placed. That way, we can stuff them for you to the correct size and finish — giving you a cushion that looks and feels exactly right.
