Do I need a sealer before polishing?Often yes. A sanding sealer (e.g., Rustins Shellac Sanding Sealer) levels the surface and improves adhesion, especially on open-grained timbers.
How do I stop knots bleeding through paint or polish?Use a knotting sealer (e.g., Rustins Knotting Sealer Solution) to lock in resin before any topcoat.
Can I refresh a dull French-polished surface without stripping?Yes. Lightly de-nib, then apply fresh polish in thin passes; shellac systems are highly repairable.
