Roof Tents & Pop-Tops – When Physics Says “No”

If you’ve ever slept in a roof tent or pop-top camper, you’ll know the truth: they look great on Instagram… but they’re never going to feel like a five-star hotel bed. And that’s not a design flaw — it’s physics.

Why Pop-Tops Are Never Going To Be The Lap Of Luxury

Comfort comes from volume — the amount of foam between you and the baseboard.
A normal home mattress is around 25 cm thick, which gives plenty of space for layers of comfort and support to do their job.

Now compare that to a pop-top mattress, where you’ve got maybe 4–5 cm total thickness to play with. That’s your entire comfort zone — and every millimetre counts.

With so little foam, the baseboard underneath can’t help but transfer pressure straight back into your body. Your brain instantly registers it as “too firm.” The truth is, the mattress isn’t too firm — it’s just too thin. Less foam volume means less ability to absorb weight evenly, so your shoulders and hips end up doing all the hard work.

🧪 Why You Can’t Just Add Memory Foam

A lot of people think, “I’ll just throw in a memory foam mattress — my bed at home feels brilliant.”
Here’s the problem: memory foam isn’t a structural material. It’s designed to work with support foam underneath it, not replace it.

Memory foam softens with body heat, moulding around you. In a pop-top setup, where there’s no depth to play with, that softness means you simply sink right through it and hit the baseboard.
That’s why a pure memory foam mattress in a pop-top feels worse, not better — you get all the heat and none of the support.

🧱 The Real Fix – Step Up the Density

If you can’t increase the thickness, you need to step up the firmness and density of the foam.
That’s where our RG50 firm foam comes in.

RG50 is high-density, high-resilience foam designed for shallow spaces. It gives proper support and keeps its shape, even at minimal thickness. It won’t bottom out, it won’t sag, and it still folds neatly when you close the roof.

You can pair it with a thin memory-foam topper (about 2.5 cm thick) if you want a softer surface feel.
That combination — dense base + light comfort layer — gets you the best of both worlds: support without that “board-hard” feeling.

The only compromise is space — every extra centimetre of comfort steals clearance when you close the roof. So balance is key: firm support first, a touch of softness on top, and a setup that actually shuts without a fight.

🌡️ “It’s Like Sleeping in an Oven” – Why You Need a Cool Cover

Pop-tops and roof tents are brilliant in the day, but once the sun goes down, they trap heat like a greenhouse.
Thin walls, little airflow, and foam wrapped in a cheap polyester cover — and suddenly it’s like sleeping in an oven.

The science is simple: foam naturally retains heat, and synthetic covers block airflow. As your body warms the mattress, the heat can’t escape, so it radiates straight back at you.
That’s where Tencel and CoolTech covers make a massive difference.

  • Tencel is made from natural wood fibres, incredibly soft, and highly breathable. It wicks moisture away and regulates body temperature — warm when it’s cold, cool when it’s hot.
  • CoolTech fabrics use advanced fibres that dissipate heat, improving airflow through the cover so you don’t wake up sticky and uncomfortable.

Fitting your roof-tent or pop-top mattress with one of these covers transforms the experience. You’ll still have limited thickness to work with — physics is physics — but at least you’ll stay cool, dry, and comfortable through the night.
